Review – Dianne Gee’s Demonstration

What a wonderful start to our program of demonstrations for 2016. Dianne began by taking us through ‘what happens before you put your brush to paper, what are the steps the artist took to get to the finished work’. *Dianne sits and studies the scene – makes a quick plein air watercolour painting to capture the light. *In the studio she looks at this painting and decides which parts she will paint – 3 options were chosen. *Using black paint she did a tonal sketch of this portion of the painting. *Decides what shape painting will be. *Colours – a) warm  yellows/ warm greens / red roof/ leave white on house b) cool blue sky and blue added to all tones / trees strong blue/ bright lively picture  / shadows ultramarine. ***************** For the next section of the demonstration Dianne told us about how she started thinking about WHIMSY in paintings. She then did a series of bird paintings which led to two successful exhibitions. Hunted for cockatoos with camera to show their shapes in flight and in trees. * Dianne does 2 coats of gesso on canvas and then paints the background colour first – she does 3 coats of this colour so you need to mix enough paint and keep it in sealed containers, * To see which colour background is suitable she paints her composition on 2 small canvases (approx. 20cm x20cm) – one with blue and the other pink. For the large canvas she chose the blue. *Using black outline the order of painting after the background colour dries is FLOWERS. LEAVES, BRANCHES and lastly the...

Proposed Council Amalgamation

We hope by now everyone has had their say on this issue. If you haven’t, all submissions must be in by 28th February. If  the amalgamation goes ahead this could affect KAS greatly. Kiama Council owns the Coach House and we are able to run our workshops, demonstrations and classes there, including the downstairs children’s studio and also able to store our equipment there. We have EXCLUSIVE use of the first floor area for a very reasonable rent. The Old Fire Station art gallery is also run by the council and they allow use of Hindmarsh Park for Art in the Park. Kiama Council is our second major sponsor for our annual exhibition held at the Kiama Leagues Club each year. Take the time to email off your submission or we might be ‘lost’ in the amalgamation. You can lodge your submission online at – www.councilboundaryreview.nsw.gov.au – search for Kiama.   Doreen...

Art in the Park and Old Fire Station – 2015

OFS and AIP Yearly Report – 2015  Old Fire Station OFS generally went well in 2015 with plenty of interest from our artists. I want to thank all those who came to my aid when I couldn’t be there and to all those who give a helping hand when hanging and to those who stay back when we take down the exhibition. It is a big job hanging everyone’s paintings.  I do my best to hang all paintings to their advantage and to enhance  look of the whole exhibition, which is important. The first thing people notice when entering is the overall impact. Our next 2 dates that we have been allocated for the next 6 months are: 1st – 7th March     and     24th – 30th May. Hopefully we have a good year and look forward to seeing you all. Art in the Park  We had a slow year due to bad weather. We look forward to some new faces coming down and joining us, the more artists there the more interest it creates for all to sell. We have started to hang our large sign between 2 trees facing the Leagues Club which shows who we are as well as the A frame in Terralong street. Happy Painting Heather Netherclift...

Discussion will include: ~ the context for the move to an Impressionistic style; ~ how Impressionism in Australia was influenced by overseas artists; but also how it differed; ~ the “Heidelberg School”; ~ the 9 x 5 exhibition; and ~ the lives of some of the key artists of the period. The cost of the program is $95 or $35 per session. The program includes selected reading material, images for review, videos and discussion during the two hour sessions. No prior knowledge is required, just an interest in learning more about art during this period. The evening program will be scheduled for March/April, depending on enrolments. Lloyd Rees Kiama Legacy Project

Lloyd Rees Kiama Legacy Project Following our highly successful festival in 2013, our next exciting Lloyd Rees project in Kiama/Gerringong is the restoration of paintings by his architectural students in 1962. These were just recently discovered a little worse for wear after a chance comment by Alan Rees, who thought he recalled that his father had been commissioned to organise a mural for the then new assembly hall at Kiama High School….. We are appealing for funds to bring these wonderful legacy works back to life for locals and visitors alike to enjoy.  You can donate via our website https://lloydreeslegacy.wordpress.com/ via paypal, or we can organise direct deposit. Funds are being used for the restoration and re-framing of the artworks, and an exhibition of the restored paintings at the Old Fire Station Gallery, Kiama from 10 – 15 May 2016. We hope you can join us there. Our aim is to raise $6,000 Our total so far is $1,010  – We would like to thank those who have generously donated. Andrea Hope and Bobbie Miller...
