APRIL DEMONSTRATION:

TUESDAY, 4th April     Kerry Suttonberg Lino block printing Kerry says – ‘Most of us have memories of lino block printing when we were at school. I dare say, in most cases the results were  forgettable. I think block printing is undervalued. I’ll attempt to convince you that the equipment needed is inexpensive, that it will take up little space at home and that it is easy to produce impressive results whilst being lots of fun.’ Come along at 1.00 pm to the Coach House and see the wonderful results you can get. Kerry will show how our press works and I’m sure you’ll go home inspired as Kerry is an enthusiastic teacher. Entry including afternoon tea…Members $10    Visitors $15 OPEN HOUSE at the COACH HOUSE. We are going to have on the 4th TUESDAY of the month, Open House at the Coach House from 9.30 am. You can come and complete all those UFOs I’m sure everyone has, use the printing press, use our new OVERHEAD PROJECTOR to transfer outlines to your canvas and enjoy a relaxed day of creativity.  DEMONSTRATION: Tuesday, 7th March WORKSHOP: 29th/30th April           with    ROS PSAKIS                          Ros says…. ‘ The goal of my classes and workshops is to show students how to push THE THREE PRIMARY COLOURS to their limits.   It’s so easy.   I demonstrate how a limited palette leads to harmonious paintings and easy colour mixing. I show the importance of TONE and how to see it. To understand how portraying at least three tones in a painting will give a good feeling of sunshine. We will see how only THREE directional lines can get even the most complicated drawing onto the canvas. This demonstration is to be based upon the local Illawarra landscape. Tracey has many years of art experience and will guide you through the steps to create your own art work. ‘I live and work in the beautiful Southern Highlands of NSW  in Australia.The natural beauty of the area inspires me  to create images based on nature, both native and introduced. The South Coast is only an hour’s drive away by car so I feel  I have access to the best of  country and coast. In my own art practice I use acrylic paint and have recently  begun to experiment with oils. I like lino cutting as it can be done by hand, without a press,   and it’s a portable type of  printmaking. I enjoy teaching children and adults in their art making as well as the elderly in a local nursing home. Making art works is a great therapy for all ages. I encourage beginner artists to experiment and I gently guide them in finding and releasing       their creative spirit.’ Tracey...

November 2nd Demonstration – Peter Griffen

WHAT A WONDERFUL WAY TO CONCLUDE OUR 2016 DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM! Join us for pre-demonstration wine and nibbles on the deck at this evening demonstration by renowned artist Peter Griffen. TIME: 6.30pm for 7.00pm at the Coach House. COST: $15 for wine, nibbles and the demonstration by Peter. Peter Griffen, born in Adelaide in 1948, and now working as a full time artist in Sydney, first exhibited in 1972 and has since had over fifty solo showings throughout Australia, five in London, four in Paris, two in St.Tropez, one in Lyon and one in New Zealand. Peter Griffen is represented by a galleries throughout Australia and in Copenhagen and by agents in UK and France. His work has been exhibited in art fairs in Europe, UK, Canada and Asia. He exhibits widely in group exhibitions, has been commissioned several times and his work has been acquired for private, public and corporate collections in Australia and overseas. Peter Griffen works and lives in his studio and also enjoys working en plein air in various parts of the world, especially in the outback of Australia. The art of Peter Griffen is influenced as much by the classical painting of the Renaissance as by the serendipity of abstract expressionism. Indigenous art from different parts of the world (in particular Australia) and its relationship to the natural landscape influence his work also, producing powerful abstract images that speak from the past.        Peter is conducting a 2 day workshop the 2nd & 3rd November  in the Jamberoo Youth Hall with 16 enthusiastic participants enrolled....

4th OCTOBER DEMONSTRATION – Ken Tucker

 My apologies to Ken and Lea. Lea sent some great recent photos of Ken and his work but, try as I might, I’m suddenly unable to upload new pictures up onto the website. WordPress decided to upgrade itself and it looks as if I need an upgrade as well???? I’ve had to use old pictures that are in the web gallery already.  Doreen   4th OCTOBER DEMONSTRATION:    Ken Tucker  At the next KAS Demonstration, Ken Tucker will create an artwork, expanding on his use of the acrylic mediums, inks, paint pens and other “effect creating” materials. Many of these he is presently experimenting with and utilising in his current artworks. Ken will bring a couple of his large completed “mixed media” artworks for the group to view and discuss. There will be samples of some of the mixed media mediums so that Participants can apply them  to sample sheets of paper to take home as reference.Ken is a great demonstrator and it’s always inspiring to learn new techniques and approaches to our art works. PRESIDENT’S REPORT:

  Committee on Opening Night Ray Teasdale, Helen Pain, Robyn McMillan, Doreen Teasdale, Heather Netherclift, Karen Wright, Judy White The Annual Exhibition has been a great success. Congratulations to all award winners. Kiama Art Society members were recipients of 19 of the allocated 38 awards. Opening night was attended by 177 artists and visitors who enjoyed an evening of catching up and discussion. About 900 people visited the exhibition and 25 paintings were sold. Of the 144 artists who entered, 71 were members of the Art Society . We have received many favourable comments, by phone and email, praising the high standard of works entered in the exhibition. The committee would like to thank all members who generously gave their time to assist during set-up and the week of the exhibition. The dates for next year’s exhibition are 26th August to 3rd September, 2017. The Annual Exhibition is an integral event on the Kiama calendar and takes place because of the support given by the Kiama Leagues Club, Kiama Council and 25 other Sponsors who were acknowledged in the previous newsletter. DEMONSTRATIONS AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER:

Make sure you have set aside TUESDAY 2nd AUGUST to come along to the COACH HOUSE and join us for SALWA WOODROFFE’S demonstration when she shows us how she creates her wonderful seascape paintings.  Salwa was OVERALL WINNER of our 2015 Exhibition and as we are only one week away from this year’s exhibition it is apt that we feature a past winner this month. The demonstration begins at 1.00pm and at the conclusion we would like everyone to mingle, chat with Salwa and enjoy afternoon tea. COST:  $10 members     $15 non-members SEPTEMBER 6th DEMONSTRATION: Keeping in the theme of featuring our past exhibition winners, this month we will have LEXIE WATT as our demonstrator. Lexie was Second Overall last year and Overall Winner in  2015.    Lexie with her winning painting in 2014 and last year’s 2nd      It will be fascinating to see how Lexie goes about creating these beautiful complex works.            ...

COUNTDOWN TO THE EXHIBITION:

The lead-up to the exhibition has been a very busy time for the AnEx Committee as all is put in readiness for another excellent exhibition. Judy has secured all our wonderful sponsors, Ray has completed the catalogue and it’s at the printers. Bump-in Registers and signs are being prepared all in readiness for WEDNESDAY, 10th AUGUST. Thank you to all who entered their paintings and we have a grand total of 387 to be hung. A special  thank you to those who have volunteered to help on Bump-in day. We need your assistance to ensure it runs efficiently and the paintings can be hung ready for judging on Thursday. We would love to have some gentlemen to help with the hanging, lifting the paintings, climbing the ladder etc. REMEMBER:    8.30am – VOLUNTEERS to the Leagues Club Main Entrance. Volunteers’ entries to be processed before 10.00am when doors open for all entries. 10.00 to 12 noon – Bump-in.    Please ensure you have all your information on a label on the back of each painting and they are the correct size.  Thank you to those members who have promptly returned their raffle ticket money. You can hand it in any time over the exhibition as it will be drawn immediately we close on Sunday 21st.  OPENING NIGHT FRIDAY 12th AUGUST 6.00pm. Make sure you mark your diary and join us for this wonderful evening of viewing the exhibition, enjoying drinks and supper with the mellow background music of Cody on the cello.
